By Linda Ruiz

Are you looking for a new hobby that does not cost too much to enjoy? Maybe you and your kids want to get crafty but you want something more exciting than the usual bead making kits. If so why not get into garden junk crafts?

If this is something that you haven't heard of it is pretty simple. You take items that you would normally throw away and transform them into decorative or useful pieces for the garden. These projects can be a lot of fun and you can get the whole family involved.

Before you can being on your first crafting project you will have to get hold of items that you can use. So look out for anything that can be left outside without deteriorating and keep them somewhere safe. Some of the most popular things to use include - cutlery, old kettles, tin baths, plates and so on.

Now you need to think about what you will be making with what you have collected. Sometimes you will have instant ideas, sometimes you might have to do a little planning. A good first project is to make a planter as these are really easy and can be used at home. Decorating plant pots with the things you have collected also looks really good.

To make sure that you have everything you need before you start it is a good idea to get some of the basics together. If you are just starting out you should get hold of some strong glue, a few tins of paint, some string and of course your junk. Then as you get into your new hobby you can add other bits to your collection that will help you to be even more creative.

You might have large items that you have used in the home that you want to throw out. One of these are headboards that have been made from metal. These can be quite ornate and with a lick of paint you can totally alter their look. Use these in the garden as trellis's for your plants and they will be a real talking point. Not only are these sturdy they will also last for years as even if the metal starts to rust, it will look really good.

If you are feeling more adventurous why not make decorative items that you can have in your garden? Take broken crockery and make a mosaic on the floor or on the top of walls. Or just go crazy and make a sculpture that visitors will love.

Old washing tubs make great planters or water features with a little bit of know how. Or how about using bowling balls as decorative items? You can paint these in various colours or even use your broken crockery to add mosaic patterns on them.

As you can see there are so many different things you can do if you want to get crafty. Making items for your garden is a lot of fun and you will get many pleasurable hours from it. You will also be acting in an environmentally friendly way by turning trash into something useful and not just throwing it away.
