Challenges In Railroad Track Maintenance

By Harriet Porter

Maintenance involve the daily monitoring and repair or railway roads to ensure that they are in perfect working condition. This involves checks and repairs on the lights, rail and power supply. Railroad Track Maintenance is essential in making sure that there are no unpleasant surprises in the rail transport system and smooth operation on a daily basis.

The process of repair involves heavy metals sliding and grinding against each other. On a large scale, this can be quite the nuisance for the locals around the area taking repairs as it is very loud. There are ways of trying to mitigate this. This involves use of well-maintained and licensed machinery, being mindful to the locals and also avoid having the power generators close to the residential areas.

The engineering crew should also try to give notice to local people at least 10 days prior maintenance works begin. The local authorities should also be notified and other information about such projects be distributed to the local people where necessary.

The information dissemination could be done through distribution of letters to the locals near where the works will be. The media can also be used to achieve this. These should aim at explaining exactly what the maintenance crew are going to do and when they expect to start and finish it. Sometimes, it may even be necessary to inform official representatives such as members of parliament and councilors.

It is unfortunate however, that it is not always possible to disseminate such notifications sometimes as maintenance is a daily routine. Consequently, it becomes unfeasible to notify everyone every time a maintenance drill leads to the need for some noisy repairs. This is mostly the case in situations of emergency. The locals along railways should therefore take necessary steps to cope with the station.

To worsen the situation, these works are mostly done at night or over the weekends. These are times when the residents are mostly at home. This makes living around such places problematic. Furthermore, most countries have made it a law that repairs be made when the railroad is closed. This leads to stagnated transport services over the more depended upon railway.

Another problem comes in with the planning of schedules related to maintenance and repairs. This is from the fact that railways operate around the clock with miles of track, level crossings and bridges. It is imperative therefore to take good care of these facilities to ensure that the transport services are smooth, convenient and reliable.

Projects involving maintenance and engineering also require to be planning months prior to being implemented. These projects are planned smaller pieces that are meant to build into a bigger, intricate programme. Tiny changes in the projects could have major effects on the other parts. There is also a big demand on the few available maintenance personnel in managing the railroads. Changing shifts across a large network of rail becomes a huge problem which leads to delays in traveling in cases of emergencies.
