Different Types Of Sports Mouthguards For Kids

By Joshua Campbell

There are often accidents and bumps while playing school sporting events. States often have rules that require students to wear sports mouthguards. Several types can be selected depending on what the student needs. Regardless of the type chosen, the device should fit well, be comfortable, and be cleaned regularly. Neither speech nor breathing should be restricted when wearing them in sporting events.

They should fit comfortably. There are several sizes that can be used or worn and care should be taken to make sure the right size is picked. Breathing and talking should be easy while wearing them. They definitely shouldn't fall out when they are worn. If it doesn't fit well, another size needs to be chosen or a dentist consulted to help with the choice.

The stock guard is the most basic. It is not designed to be a perfect fit. There are different sizes and most stores can help you figure out the size you will need. It is important to have one that forms close to the shape of your jaw in order for it to fit over the teeth properly. If it is too big or small it won't provide the best protection.

Another type is the boil and bite. This is the most often chosen because it fits well but is not as expensive as custom made devices. The material softens when you boil it. When it is cool enough, you place it correctly in your mouth and bite down hard for several minutes. This allows the material to form to the impression of your teeth, making it fit better when it's in your mouth. Using this type is usually more comfortable and will stay in place during play.

Custom guards can be made by a dentist. These are usually for students that have braces or some other fixed dental device in their mouth. They often create a second one to protect the lower teeth from damage as well. They're more expensive but provide the best fit and protection of the three types. They are specially made based on a mold of your teeth. They will also be the most comfortable.

Do not leave temporary or removable dental equipment in your mouth. They should be removed prior to using the guards or playing sports because they may break during play. The guards won't fit well with them in your mouth. If you have concerns, you should contact your dentist about the best approach.

A crucial part of owning these is proper care. They need to be kept away from dogs and cats to prevent them from being chewed up. They should also be washed every day using a toothbrush just like when you brush your teeth. This prevents bacteria from forming which could cause other issues with your teeth and gums. Some will come with their own storage container, if not, store them in a cool dry place away from the sun.

Having fun with sports is something that is common for students and adults worldwide. It's important to have the best protective equipment in order to have fun safely. The right type of mouth protection will help reduce risks for broken teeth and other injuries that could happen to the mouth during play.
