Laser marking is a special process that is widely used in a large number of industries to accomplish various tasks. Basically, this process employs a laser beam to label work pieces. Laser marking is gaining more popularity as a technique for labelling because of its benefits. The level of accuracy when using this procedure is very high such that it can be used to make very small and clear markings. This procedure can be used to achieve the same quality of results several times.

Another advantage is that this is a very fast process. In the market today, this process is considered the fastest labelling method. When working with this process, there is increased production since work is done at a high speed thus making the method cost effective in the manufacturing process. The speed at which work is done can be increased by using different laser sources.

Laser markings are long lasting and since they are intended to be permanent they provide high resistance levels to acid, scratches and heat. It is for this reason that items marked with laser technology can be used under various situations without one worrying about destroying the markings. During marking, the substance being marked does not get destroyed in any way so long as the equipment settings are set correctly.

It is virtually possible to mark any kind of material using this technology. Some of the materials that are commonly marked include metals, plastics, laminates, films, and foils. Under metals, some of the metals that can be marked include gold, bronze, titanium, platinum, copper, silver, stainless steel, and aluminum among many others. Under plastics, examples of plastics marked are PMMA, polyamide, polycarbonate, and ABS.

All different processes involving laser can be performed by the same equipment. Annealing marking is one of the processes that can be done using the machine. This special etching process is done on metals using lasers. Application of lasers on metals causes oxidation underneath the material. As a result, there is change in color on the surface being heated.

Another process is called staining. In this process, lasers generate a heating effect which triggers a chemical reaction in the material of the work piece. The effect is that there are different color shades produced from the process. Which color shades are produced usually depends on the chemical composition of the material.

There is a special type of equipment used to carry out this process. This piece of equipment has the capability to produce both the solid-state and CO types of laser. There are several factors which determine the type of laser to be used during this process including the type of material to be worked on among others.
