Insects have a very important role in ensuring there is a balance in the different ecosystems. They come with various benefits to humans as well as making work easier in some cases. Insects can however be very destructive and harmful to humans and their environment. The dangers may range from venomous bites to being distressing pests. Human beings need to find ways of keeping insects away from them and their environment.

One way of keeping them away is by use of insect repellent which is applied on surfaces and places. They can be applied on exterior spaces, skin or on clothing. The reason for application is discouraging them from landing or climbing on the surface or place. The risk of breaking out of insect-borne diseases is reduced or controlled this way. West Nile Fever, Malaria, Dengue Fever, Bubonic Plague, River Blindness, and Lyme disease are examples of insect-borne diseases.

Not everybody is at risk of contracting insect-borne diseases. Generally, there are locations that are more prone to these diseases than others. In most cases, people living in rural areas tend to be more prone to attacks by insects than those who live in urban areas. Mosquitoes, tsetse flies and many bugs also favor places with rivers or pools of water because they need water to lay their eggs. Thus, people living in such places should be more careful.

It is recommended to give due attention to ingredients in a product when shopping for repellants. Understand that ingredients are crucial in determination of the efficiency and safety of a product. Choose one that does not cause any medical condition after use. People with allergies to certain ingredients must also avoid products that can trigger reaction.

It is important to know the ingredients in such a product specifically if one encounters allergic reactions from coming into contact with some substances. There are some ingredients which have proved to have a high efficiency level than others. According to research products which contained lemon oil, deet, picaridin and eucalyptus have proved to be more efficient. The product may not specifically contain these ingredients but ingredients from the same category.

Besides checking for the ingredients in a product, one should also pay attention to the concentration of the various ingredients. Products that contain the same ingredients may be rated very differently. This is because the products contain different concentrations of the same ingredients. In addition to that, the form in which the product is available plays a big role too. Products that come in lotion form have been found to be less effective.

Reading the application instructions carefully before using the product is important. Most products are meant to be applied on clothing or open skin. It is not advisable to apply the product on skin that is under clothing and also one is advised to ensure they apply enough but not excess repellent.

Repellents should not be applied over irritated skin, wounds, or cuts. In other words, the product is meant for external use only, and should not find its way into the body or blood stream. Eyes and mouth should be avoided during application, and one should wash their hands thoroughly after use.
