Steam Jacketed Valves As The Most Common Type

Valves are type of devices that will direct, control, or regulate the fluid flow either by closing or opening partially or fully the obstruction of passageways. The examples of these fluids are slurries, fluidized solids, liquids, and gases. Technically, these are referred to as fittings but are categorized and discussed separately. The fittings are used in pipe systems to connect the sections of a pipe or a tubing and to measure the fluid flow.

For the open types of valve, fluids will flow to the direction from the high pressure to the low pressure. The simple and most ancient valves are made hinged flaps that drops for the obstruction of fluid flow, either liquid or gas, to one direction only and it will be pushed open through its flow in the opposite direction. The steam jacketed valves type are the most common in use in the city Houston, TX.

The main purpose for the production of steam jackets are to maintain the temperature. A steam is consists of hot fluids circulated for keeping the fluids warm and for maintaining its liquid state. The location of circulation is between the vessel walls and jackets. It will also allow the heat to be transferred through a vessel wall.

Before and after the valves are being jacketed, it need to be pressure tested and leak tested. There are a lot of considerations when doing the jacketing. It includes the partial or full coverage, materials, flange size, type and location of a heated medium connection, bonnet jacket or the additional heat coverage in some specific areas.

Valves are consist of 11 useful components and the common parts are the bonnet and body. The body is an outer part that contains all of the internal components which are called the trim. Usually, it is made metallic or plastic. Cast iron, brass, steel, bronze, alloy steels, gunmetal, and stainless steel are other commonly used materials.

The function of the bonnet is to serve as a body covering. It is often semi permanently bolted or screwed to the body. In its process of manufacturing, internal components are positioned inside a body first before attaching the bonnet into it for holding all things inside. To maintain the components inside, this can be detached.

The ports serve as passages where in the running of fluids occurs. Typically, the valves have 2 ports. The handle will manually control the valve coming from the outside while the actuator is one mechanism that will automatically control it. The disc is a type of obstruction that moves and restricts the flow.

The seat is the part where in it contacts the disc to form leak tight seal. It is classified to either soft seats or hard seats. The stem transmits motion from handle and controls devices to the disc. The gaskets are used for preventing fluid leakages.

Valve balls are applied into processes that have high tolerance, high pressure, or severe duty. Stellite, nickel, titanium, brass, stainless steel, and hastelloy are the common materials. Springs will shift discs to default positions and will also allow to reposition the discs. Internal parts of valve are called trims.
