A Look At The Tennessee Walking Horse

By Amy Patterson

Farmers and ranchers have bred an animal that is strong for working their fields and offer their owner comfort when riding. If you are a farmer or rancher you may want to have these horses on your property. The Tennessee Walking Horse, TWH, is probably your best choice. This passive animal has a dual purpose. It is able to work and provide the owner with a smooth easy ride.

These horses became popular due to their smooth gait and agility over rocky ground. They are resulted from crossbreeding various breeds such as the American Standardbred, Narragansett Pacer, Thoroughbred, Morgan, and Canadian Pacer. Crossbreeding these creatures produced the signature running walk. Eventually this beautiful animal became known as a walker.

The breed is a perfect family animal because of its temperament and smooth gait. These creatures are great ranch workers and excellent cutting horses. They are used in western style driving, gaming, and jumping events. The breed is suitable for any age rider and is often chosen for riders who have problems with their back. In addition they are frequently used for programs for the disabled.

Even though other walkers have various gaits, the running walk is the one that is chosen more often. A TWH is able to travel sour to seven miles in one hour with the regular step. When using the running walk the animal can smoothly cover eight to ten miles in one hour. Although the running walk is similar to the gait of any horse, there is a difference in speed. This breed is able to travel faster because the rear feet glide over the tracks of the front hooves.

The breed also nods its head in time to the tempo of its step. The also have an innate ability to perform other kinds of steps in addition to a running walk. These steps include the stepping pace, foxtrot, and pace. They are especially well known for the rocking chair canter which is the calm and relaxed way they gallop.

The TWH can be bred with any breed. The animal is commonly fourteen to seventeen hands high, or 56 to 68 inches tall. In addition, they weigh from nine hundred to twelve hundred pounds. The colors and patterns of the horse vary. Some are black, palomino, or chestnut. They are also often seen with spotted patterns.

These horses are preferred for the natural way they have of walking. The training methods used by owners and trainers are a humane way to develop their unique gait. No pain is inflicted during training to result in an exaggerated gait as it was in the past.

If you have the opportunity to see one of these beautiful animals up close you will agree that there is something majestic about them. Their gentile nature and smooth step make them ideal for families and any age rider. This is also a strong breed that can be used as a working horse on the ranch or farm as well as offer hours of enjoyable riding.
