Choosing A Firm To Handle Global Shipping

By Ruth Taylor

Nowadays many companies and individuals need to send items overseas using courier companies. When looking for a firm to handle global shipping there are a few things to take into consideration before sending items. There are many shippers available worldwide to handle this business in a professional way and at reasonable cost.

Items ranging from things such as passports and letters through to large bulky items can be shipped to nearly every country in the world. When looking for a company to ship items a few quotes should be obtained to compare price and service. The fees charged differ vastly according to a few things.

As all of these companies charge by weight or volume this should be calculated first to obtain a price. Smaller packages may be sent using a fixed price scale system and larger items charged per kilogram or by volume if large but not heavy. Items that require packing will need to be protected and wrapped carefully before the parcel is picked up by the driver or taken by the sender to the shipping office.

The speed in which the package needs to arrive at its final destination will also be reflected in the costs. An item that is sent on a same day service will be considerably more expensive than a non urgent 10 day carriage. Most destinations worldwide are on carriers lists but it is a good idea to research this first as a few countries may be off limits.

After dropping the goods at a depot or having them collected by a driver there is a little paperwork to be completed. This docket should be retained until the transaction is complete as it lists all details and a number for tracking purposes. The sender can use this tracking code to monitor the parcels progress on its travels using the company's web site.

When shopping around for prices it is worth consulting a few different companies to compare their services. Large well established firms are a good choice but it is worth looking at smaller local carriers too. These small firms will often use the larger businesses to handle the goods but will get a better rate than a one off sender due to the volume of traffic they send each month.

Small carriers are often the better choice for an individual as they will allow cash or credit card payment. The larger firms will often require the sender to open an account before doing any business. If sending items regularly it may be worth opening an account as a better rate can be negotiated depending on frequency of shipping.

Prior to sending anything through a postal system of carriage it is important to obtain insurance for items sent to cover loss or damages. All companies will have cover in place at an extra cost or the senders can arrange cover themselves. After working out the value of the package and its replacement costs if lost suitable insurance can be provided for peace of mind.
