In modern life, blasting is a very necessary process. However, it is not also a secret that the process is hazardous to those working with blasters. It is harmful to the environment as well. Due to that, procedures have to be implemented to make sure that dry ice blasting is done in a safe manner. For services of dry ice blasting New York needs to be given first priority.

Blasting is a process that entails the use of various materials to clean surfaces. These materials include coal slag, copper slag, silica sand, glass beads, steel shot, steel grit, and nickel slag. These materials are grouped generally into toxic and non-toxic materials. Dry ice, plastic bead media, water, baking soda, sponge, and ground shells are examples of non-toxic materials.

Various factors are considered when choosing the kind of material to use. For instance, cost, health of workers, environmental factors and specification of the job need to be considered. When it comes to job specifications, some types of materials cannot be used on certain surfaces. For instance, using glass beads on wooden surfaces can cause a lot of damage. It is advisable that the material be tested on a small portion of the surface before applying it on large scale.

The use of toxic abrasive materials has resulted to certain health issues that make them unsafe. For instance, silica sand has been associated with breathing problems, lung cancer and silicosis. This has resulted in the banning of the use of silica sand in some areas. The use of silica sand without the authoritative permit is illegal in some jurisdictions.

Garnet sand and coal slag have been associated with lung damage. The health effects of coal slag and garnet sand are similar to those of silica sand according to studies. Other materials that are known to cause lung damage are glass beads, nickel slag, and copper slag. Steel grit and steel shot have not been associated with lung damage of any kind so far.

Heavy machines are used when it comes to use of abrasive blasting. The machines are heavy and generate a lot of noise. Dangerous materials are also sometimes found on the surfaces being blasted. For example, they may have lead paint and silica. Due to those risks, it is advisable to undertake the process with a lot of care, that is, care must be taken before, during and after the activity.

Those materials that are less toxic are the ones that should be used. Also, abrasive materials that can be mixed with water and other types of liquids should be used since they do not produce dust. As mentioned above, dust is produced in large quantities during this process. Dust production occurs for the entire period the process is being done.

The blasting activity should be done in an enclosed area. This is for the purpose of preventing the spread of dust to the environment and people near the location. This can be achieved through the employment of curtain walls. In case of small scale blasting, then there is the use of blast cabinets in order to contain the dust produced. There should also be proper ventilation in the operation rooms to help in reducing dust accumulation.
