After the clean air act was passed in the year 1993, it was considered illegal to release refrigerants into the air. It is after that law was passed that air conditioning repair jobs became complex. There were costly and new tools that were required for the job. It became important for AC service professionals to start by recovering refrigerant. The process of refrigerant recovery involves removing the liquid from within the system and storing it safely.

Safety is one of the very important aspects of the entire process. The right types of tools should be used for the type of refrigerant. You will need to have safety goggles and gloves that are important in preventing frostbite. Also required will be charging hoses with valves at the ends. You have to check the condition of the hoses before getting to use them. In order to get the best outcome, you should use hoses that are short. The reason for this is to reduce impact on the environment.

For the recovery process, there are three basic methods, that is, vapor, liquid and push-pull. For the liquid recovery process, it is possible to transfer the refrigerant when it is in the liquid state. It is a method that is good for transfer of refrigerants from one container to another. This is the fastest of the three procedures. However, it cannot be used for all HVAC systems. There are cases that will require the vapor process.

The vapor procedure is a slower one but us the one that is used most. It involves transfer of refrigerant in its vapor state. The two methods, liquid and vapor, are the same. The difference comes in because the refrigerants in the two processes are transferred in different states. This in essence also means that settings on the unit are also different.

The push pull technique removes liquid refrigerants fast but is a two step process. After removal of all the liquid in step one, there must be a change of hose connections for the vapor to be recovered. In essence, the push pull method is only used when there are more than 10 pounds of the refrigerant. For the liquid recovery technique, refrigerants are transferred when still in their liquid state.

When it comes to vapor recovery, there is condensing of vapor into liquid at the recovery unit before it gets transferred into a cylinder. Before the process is started, the system being services must be switched off and all its valves closed. The other procedures can then be carried out.

When it comes to transfer of large amounts of refrigerant, the best technique is the push pull one. The recovery unit produces vapor from the cylinder, producing high pressure discharge gas. It is a procedure which is very effective but will need a lot of equipment. It is thus difficult to carry out.

Whereas there are some of these procedures that one can carry out individually, the use of professionals is mostly preferred. This is because environmental regulations must be followed lest one be fined. Safety will also be assured.
