By Laura Watson

In packaging, paper has a very important role. This is because it is very versatile and does not only protect the goods it also helps advertise them. Paper boards are the most common type of paper that is used in packaging. Corrugated boxes St Louis are the frequently used shipping packaging for very many products worldwide.

Corrugated boxes are the cornerstone of modern manufacturing and distribution worldwide. They are used to ship different types of products from electronic equipment to normal everyday household items. They are known to be efficient, strong, easy to handle and control and can be printed. They are also recyclable. The role they play is less glamorous but very significant in shipping.

In today's packaging industry, when it comes to choosing a packaging material, corrugated boxes and plastic are the most competitive choices. Corrugated boxes usually have the upper hand in that they can be recycled and reused for other non-shipping uses. It is common to find them in a normal household being used as storage containers. They are also commonly used when moving or transporting personal belongings.

The boxes are usually used as a secondary packaging choice. This means that they package goods that are already in their final packaging. The goods are meant to be transported from the manufacturers to the distributors and retailers. Final consumers get the products without the corrugated boxes.

The basic printing that is done on the outside of the boxes is usually to help identify the contents of the boxes and nothing else. However, there are various manufacturers that have embraced corrugated boxes as a primary packaging material. In this case, the boxes are clearly labeled and contain heavy printing that aims to attract the customers to buy the products.

Corrugated boxes are made from special machines that laminate paperboard into several layers. The boxes come in different layers such as single, double or triple layers depending on their use. Single layered boxes are used to transport materials in rolls, while double and triple layered boxes carry heavy duty products like car parts and other bulky and heavy products.

The number of layers and the size of the flutes between the different layers determine the thickness of the box. The most common flute size is the one that is found in the standard single-layered box. There are however different sizes all dependent on the type of box needed and what it shall carry.

Mostly the liner boards are made from heavy unbleached ground wood paper. This is the brown material that is commonly seen on corrugated boxes. The liner boards are glued to the flutes to form the boards.

To create an even surface on the boxes, the smallest flute is placed on the last layer. This creates a smooth surface that allows any printing to be done. The large flutes are usually placed on the inside. This ensures the box is strong enough for goods to be stacked inside it. A double layered box usually has three liner boards with two flute layers. The two flute layers do not need to be of the same size.
