About Army Portable Water Treatment Units

By Anna Mitchell

The main problem with previously used seawater desalination equipment was the fact this equipment was really heavy and large, complicated to transport and not so effective. It could be used with limitations and was expensive to operate. Army Portable Water Treatment Units have numerous advantages when compared to those old systems, and can be used without previous limitations.

Thanks to this new and innovative technology, other sources can be successfully used, including brackish water and even the one polluted with different chemicals, bacteria and so on. This might be of a great importance not only for military issues, but also wherever there is a problem with supplies, for example during floats, natural disasters or humanitarian crises in different parts of the world.

The costs for bottled water are high, and using this innovative filtering system can reduce these costs immensely. Purifying available sources can lower these costs to a minimum. And these minimal costs basically cover the cost of a fuel and the cost of a chemical that are needed for periodical cleaning and disinfection of all included parts, and the chlorine that is added in the final phase of the purification. Considering the prognosis, this could make a great difference.

The method is simple and really efficient. The pump is used for extracting the water from the source, through the first strainer, straight into one collapsible tank made of fabric. These tanks are light, collapsible and easy to transport. The booster pump is then use to force it through the second, 200 micron strainer, toward the UF module. This all happens simultaneously.

UF module filters bacteria, different microorganisms and other particles contained in source. This stage is a one stage of the filtration before coming to RO membrane, which additionally purifies. In so called chemical module, the chlorine is added for residual disinfection, and the whole process is finished, for only a fraction of a time needed before.

When comparing this new purifying method to older ones, there are numerous valuable improvements. In the first place, easier transport and much lower expenses. Fast operations and practical design, easy and cost-effective handling and maintenance and reliable results are probably more than satisfying reasons for buying such systems. And the fast that almost all sources available can be purified is another great advantage.

Total costs included are really low in this case, and this is always very important factor. If the existing price is considered, using this method can lower the costs several times, and produce clean water for only 7 cents per gallon. Just to mention that some other systems might lower this cost on maybe 1$ per gallon, and it will be quite obvious why this might be revolutionary solution.

Except being used in different military operations, these purifying systems could be of a great help when it comes to humanitarian crises, pollution or other emergency responses. Low costs, high efficiency and the possibility of treating all available sources, including those contaminated with various chemicals or even biological warfare agents, all this makes this system really special.
